"Carly's Argus"

Julie Shotton paints intricate still-life arrangements set against a background of drapery and viewed from an aerial perspective. This perspective results in a strong geometric emphasis of the objects' shapes.

When putting together a still life, she attempts to express a thought or feeling. Shotton combines objects based on their beauty, interest, or symbolic meaning, enjoying the contrast of manufactured objects with those found in nature. The drapery provides movement and rhythm in opposition to the stillness and weight of the objects.

Including old master paintings and sculptures introduces figures and personalities, adding another psychological layer for the viewer to consider.
