Julie Shotton lives in Sublette, Kansas, a small agricultural community in southwestern Kansas. She studied art at Wichita State University as a graphic design major and has been painting and selling paintings for over 25 years. She taught art at Crosswalk Christian School in Sublette for grades K-12 from 1994 to 2006. She is now back to painting in her studio full time.
"I began painting with watercolors because of their convenience. I continue to use them because I love the glow of the transparent colors and the beautiful variations in hue that occur as a result of the interaction between the sedimentary pigments and the staining pigments."
"Most of my compositions deal with the play of light across objects. The objects themselves often hold an allegorical meaning to me. I like comparing things that are timeless and things that are temporal, contemplating ideas such as 'what is important in this life?' It doesn't matter if the viewer is aware of the relationship of the objects to each other, but that is what inspires me and holds my interest as I paint."
Julie Shotton is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and has had paintings accepted into juried competitions of the National Watercolor Society, American Watercolor Society, among others. Her painting "Postcards from the Louvre" was a finalist in Watercolor Magazine's 2005 Cover Competition.
